On a seasonal island on the bank of the BetwaRiver, which has been surrounded by a battlement wall, stands a huge palace-fort. The fort consists of several connected buildings erected at different times, the most noteworthy of which are the Raja Mahal and the Jahangir Mahal.

The RamRajaTemple is built on a square base and has an almost entirely plain exterior, relieved by projecting windows and a line of delicate domes along the summit. The Jahangir Mahal is built on a rectangular base and is relieved by a circular tower at each corner surmounted by a dome, while two lines of graceful balconies supported on brackets mark the central storey’s. The roof is crowned by eight large fluted domes, with smaller domes between them, connected by an ornamental balustrade. The Jahangir Mahal is considered to be a singularly beautiful specimen of Mughal architecture. ChaturbhujTemple is an old temple from the 9th century.

Numerous cenotaphs or chhatris dot the vicinity of the fort and the Betwa river. Elsewhere about the town there is an unusual variety of temples and tombs, including the Chaturbhuj temple, which is built on a vast platform of stone. The more unguarded and neglected of these buildings are popular hangouts for tropical bees, wasps, and other such excitable stingy creatures.

In 2006, Orchha’s buildings were being documented by the LIK Team of IIT Roorkee,India.

The Phool Bagh is a laid garden of Orchha and carries the testimony of the highly polished aesthetic sagacity of the Bundelas, who used to rule this small palace. This garden has also served as a summer retreat by the kings of Orchha. This Bagh was built as a memorial for prince of Orchha, Dinman Hardaul. He died as a martyr in order to prove his innocence to his big brother.

The structure and premises of Phool Bagh provides a resourceful system for water ventilation and connects the underground palace with Chandan Katora fountain. The place also comprises the Badgir Sawan Bhadon Towers, which were built to provide a cooling effect to this ‘bagh’ by capturing the wind around. The plantation at this garden is said to have been done in the Mughal style.

Dinman Hardaul’s Palace is also situated near this garden. This palace is also dedicated to the prince of Orchha, Dinman Hardaul.  The Prince died in this place proving his innocence to his brother that he didn’t had an affair with his sister-in-law. Even today, the prince is worshipped here by the local villagers in this palace.

An architectural marvel of the ancient times, Sunder Mahal bears relics to the rich religious fervor and old grandeur of Orchha. One of the worth visiting travel attractions in Orchha, Sunder Mahal represents the intense love between Prince Dhurbhajan who was a Hindu and his Muslim lover.

According to a historical legend, the son of Raja Jhujhar Singh, Prince Dhurbhajan had fallen in deep love with a girl from a Muslim family. After facing stiff resistance from his family, Prince Dhurbhajan resorted to deep meditation and religious prayers to find peace of mind and soul. He even left the imperial palace and started leading the life of a hermit. Prince Dhurbhajan was greatly admired as a religious saint among the Muslims of the area.

After his wedding to his lover, Prince Dhurbhajan had constructed the magnificent structure of Sunder Mahal. The native Muslim population of Orchha started worshipping Prince Dhurbhajan and his residence turned to be a sacred shrine among the followers. Till today devotees from the Muslim religion visit Sunder Mahal to seek divine blessings and eternal happiness from the revered soul of Prince Dhurbhajan.

Sunder Mahal represents the rich architectural legacy of the ancient times. Amidst the picturesque backdrop of River Betwa of Madhya Pradesh, the giant architectural structure of Sunder Mahal stands tall with its over imposing monument.

Sunder Mahal adds to the old glory of Orchha. The beautiful edifice of the sprawling Sunder Mahal reflects the rich artistic skill and creative imagination of the local craftsmen of the traditional period.

It is a scene that can be best described as a stereotype. The India that every foreign traveler dreams about — the mystical, spiritual India where the bizarre and the regular meet at street corners, where cows are worshiped , where saffron clad men with tambura in hand try hard to look saintly but end up being talented street musicians, where kitsch and color sell at bazaars.

There are many legends around the temple. Orchha is reportedly the only place in the country where Lord Ram is worshiped in his royal aspect and not as an avtar of Vishnu.

With its soaring spires and palatial architecture, the Ram Raja temple is surely one of the most unusual inIndia. The temple is an interesting fusion of modern architecture in an ancient palace with shrines scattered around. They simply do not blend although religion and heritage meet right in the heart of this town. The courtyard is an open bazaar selling anything from sweets to knick knacks. The cows stand stubbornly in your path, accustomed to being worshiped and fed. The tiled flooring inside becomes shelter for devotees who prepare to sleep.

It is said that Lord Ram resides in Ayodhya by day and sleeps in Orchha at night. Hence the Ram Raja Temple remains closed throughout the day: the heavy silver doors of the sanctum are flung open only at 7 p.m. when the evening aarti is performed. It’s a moving ceremony laced with a certain amount of pomp and fanfare. The gun salute reverberates through the night as the lights fade away. Do not miss the Ram raja Temple aarti when you visit Orchha. It is one of the best ceremonial sights to behold. The Aarti is as pompous and grand as the temple itself.

Ram’s wedding is enacted each year in mid December. Orchha itself resembles a bedecked bride as the baraat – comprising gorgeously decorated chariots, caparisoned elephants, and horses – wends its way down the narrow streets. Later, the town celebrates the royal nuptials over a banquet (bhandara) hosted by the temple trust.

Ram Raja temple gets very crowded during Ram Naumi celebration, which is the busiest time of the year in Orchha. Once, few tourists literally went back from the highway because there were no rooms to even put their feet on the ground. Also during this time, you can see tribal people (Moniye) wearing and holding peacock feathers in their hands and doing traditional dance performances etc.

Plan your next holidays for this hidden town of Bundelkhand to experience the magnificence of Raja Ram Temple and the divine aarti!!
